News of Georgetown Presbyterian Church
June 2007
"Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds… Teach them to your children, talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." Deuteronomy 11:18-19
"Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these…’ And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them." Mark 10:14, 16
Dear Friends,
On May 23, members of the Session met with five of our youth who had participated in confirmation training over the past several weeks. On May 27, during the 11:00 worship service, those young people were confirmed in their faith, and they became active members of Georgetown Presbyterian Church. Also on that Sunday the CIA and PYF youth led us in worship.
I mention this because every once in a while a heavy emphasis on our youth ministry reminds us how important it is to take seriously the vows that we make as a congregation whenever we baptize our children: "Do you promise to guide and nurture this child by word and deed, with love and prayer, encouraging them to know and follow Christ and to be a faithful member of his church?" The Christian nurture of our children is of utmost importance in the life of the church. On occasions such as Confirmation and Youth Sunday, we get to see the fruits of our faithfulness to that task.
There are always opportunities to contribute to the spiritual growth of our children and youth. Let me share a few ministries that could use some help from you:
Children’s choirs
Sunday school
Children’s focus classes
Nursery
Children’s church
VBS (coming very soon!)
Youth trips
CIA or PYF advisors
If you are invited to help out in any way, I hope you will give a positive response. The spiritual legacy of the next generation depends on us.
Faithfully yours,
Steve Wilkins
Manna in the Morning
June, 2007
"Then the Lord said... ‘I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day.’ ...The people of Israel called the bread manna." Numbers 16:4, 31
"One does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord." Deuteronomy 8:3
Won’t you take time to each day to let God speak to you through His Word? Listed below is a series of daily readings from the Bible. You are encouraged to spend a few minutes in the morning to let the scriptures soak into your heart. There is a single text listed for each weekday and Saturday; the Sunday texts are the lectionary selections that are incorporated into our worship services. One suggestion for daily reading would be to engage with the text through a process known as "Lectio Divina" (a Latin term that simply means "Divine Reading." For more information on Lectio Divina, please see the reverse side of this sheet. Read God’s Word, and take time to reflect on what God might be saying to you.

Lectio Divina
Use lectio divina in your daily reading of scripture.
One of the most central and ancient practices of Christian prayer is lectio divina, or divine reading. In lectio divina, we begin by reading a few verses of the Bible. We read unhurriedly so that we can listen for the message God has for us there. We stay alert to connections the Spirit may reveal between the passage and what is going on in our lives. We ask, "What are you saying to me today, Lord? What am I to hear in this story, parable, or prophecy?" Listening in this way requires patience and a willingness to let go of our own agendas and open ourselves to God’s shaping.
Once we have heard a word that we know is meant for us, we are naturally drawn to prayer. From listening we move to speaking — perhaps in anguish, confession or sorrow; perhaps in joy, praise, thanksgiving or adoration; perhaps in anger, confusion or hurt; perhaps in quiet confidence, trust or surrender. Finally, after pouring out our heart to God, we come to rest simply and deeply in that wonderful, loving presence of God. Reading, reflecting, responding and resting — this is the basic rhythm of divine reading.
1. Read the scripture slowly. Watch for a key phrase or word that jumps out at you or promises to have special meaning for you. It is better to dwell profoundly on one word or phrase than to skim the surface of several chapters. Read with your own life and choices in mind.
2. Reflect on a word or phrase. Let the special word or phrase that you discovered in the first phase sink into your heart. Bring mind, will and emotions to the task. Be like Mary, Jesus’ mother, who heard of the angel’s announcement and "treasured" and "pondered" what she had heard (Luke 2:19).
3. Respond to what you have read. Form a prayer that expresses your response to the idea, then "pray it back to God." What you have read is woven through what you tell God.
4. Rest in God’s word. Let the text soak into your deepest being, savoring an encounter with God and truth. When ready, move toward the moment in which you ask God to show you how to live out what you have experienced.

Village News
My introduction to Frances Napier was through the Auxiliary at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. I met her on her hands and knees in the main corridor of the hospital. She was diligently writing the names of individuals, in calligraphy, on a scroll for the Lights of Love program sponsored by the Auxiliary. Frances has the most beautiful handwriting of anyone I have ever known. From that day on, she and I have been very close friends.
Frances is a native of Georgetown. She was a Harrelson. After her schooling and marriage into the army, through her husband Tom, there have been many moves. Frances and Tom had two daughters; Frances and family live in Florida, and Tomi and family live in Augusta, Georgia.
The Napiers moved back to Georgetown in 1976 and settled in the countryside. After Tom passed away, Frances moved into the city and resided on Black River Road across from the Georgetown Presbyterian Church. This put her in close proximity to the hospital and the church and she did a lot of volunteering. Frances was a member of the Historical Society of Hemingway and Georgetown Nominating Chair of the Woman’s Association, President of her Sunday School Class and a member of Circle 4. Frances was a member of Georgetown Memorial Hospital Auxiliary for 18 years.
Frances resettled in the Village in 1995 and says that she has never regretted the move. Although she has many friends in Georgetown, she has many friends here in the Village. If you ever run out of jokes, just get in touch with Frances. She always has one to pass along.
Village News will be back in September, the writer is taking the summer off.

Faithfully Instructing Students’ Hearts
It’s difficult to imagine that another school year has passed. We have had such a good time. The children have been great! Of course, we look forward to summer activities, but the pace of the fall/winter will be missed.
I want to thank all of the parents for sharing your child with us. I pray that we have made some wonderful memories that will last a lifetime. The children have been involved in some awesome out-reach projects this year. One final activity was place mats made for our Mother’s Day Brunch. The children colored 58 mats which were then laminated and used for the brunch. Everyone that attended the festivities was able to take a mat home as a memento.
A gracious thank-you is also extended to Anne Tamsberg for all of her hard work and dedication. Anne volunteered throughout the year doing crafts and assisting in the two year old class. She was instrumental in the Mothers’ Day place mats. The children enjoyed making them as much as the moms enjoyed using them. Thanks, Anne, for all that you do.
The summer is gearing up to be fun and exciting. If you get a chance, please stop by and check us out. Our pool gardens should be showing some growth soon. Water day is always interesting to witness, and let’s not forget skate day. We’ll travel to Howard Auditorium on Wednesdays to participate in the library adventures. Thursdays will be our movie day, and if we have the energy, Fridays we will skate. We will do as much as we can in the short time that we have.
Have a safe summer, if you can’t be with us. Otherwise, we’ll see you beginning June 4th.
Grace and Peace to you,
Debbie
Change4Children Follow Up
During worship on April 29, we received a special offering of loose change. For six months, we have been asking the members of the congregation to save their loose change and put it in baskets for Change4Children. All money collected will be sent to Zambia to provide nourishment, health care, shelter, and education for children who have been orphaned due to AIDS.
Here is what we collected on April 29: 329 pounds of coins, totaling $3008.52, plus an additional $723.33 in currency and checks, making a grand total of $3,731.85.
In the days that followed, we received additional offerings totaling $816.
The final total that we are sending to Africa is $4547.85. Way to go, GPC!

Summer Time with PYF & CIA
We have three new programs starting this summer and they are: Cook’n at the Carl’s, Lunch Bunch, and Summer Time Chill
Cook’n at the Carl’s is where the Senior High Youth can gather at Bruce and Marcy’s (432 McDonald Rd) and enjoy some hamburgers and hot dogs, and catch up with their youth group friends.
Lunch Bunch is for middle school youth. We will gather in the youth lounge for food and games and fun times with our youth friends. Due to the CDC Schedule, we will not be in the gym during this time unless they have nothing planned in there. Bring your own sack lunch and drinks.
Summer Time Chill this is what we are calling our Open Gym this summer. Youth from 6th grade – 12th grade along with any of our Alumni youth home from college can gather and enjoy the gym while playing basketball, volleyball, skating (designated times only) We will also supply the Pizza and Cold Drinks. If we have enough Adult help we can even expand into the youth lounge for movies and game room.

FYI
The youth program will be Welcoming the rising classes to their prospective groups beginning with the June activities. This means that rising 6th graders will be welcome to join in CIA activities and the rising 9th graders will move into PYF. However, the Sunday School hour, they will stay in their current classes. This helps with adjusting the kids into the new environment, and does not throw off the Sunday school program which will promote the youth in August.
Peace
Thank you!
Thank you so very much for your prayers and kind gifts as Sam and I have struggled through this crisis in our lives. We are truly blessed to have Georgetown Presbyterian Church as part of our family. Thanks to everyone for caring for us during this difficult time.
